ATDI has successfully completed a major project with Trafikverket, the authority responsible for Sweden’s national road and rail infrastructure. Trafikverket oversees the construction, planning, and maintenance of the country’s transport networks, including the telecommunications systems that ensure safe and reliable railway operations.

This project focused on delivering a comprehensive radio planning platform capable of supporting multiple railway communication technologies. At the centre of the solution is HTZ Communications, ATDI’s advanced RF planning tool, which enables engineers to plan, model, and optimise complex radio networks within a single engineering environment.

A key aspect of the project was supporting the evolution of railway communications towards the next-generation standard, the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS). FRMCS is being introduced across Europe to replace GSM-R and will support the increasing demand for reliable, high-capacity communications required for modern railway operations.

The platform deployed for Trafikverket allows engineers to plan and analyse networks across FRMCS, GSM-R, VHF communications, and radio line transmission systems. By managing these technologies within a unified planning environment, the system enables Trafikverket to support both the existing communications infrastructure and the transition to future rail technologies.

The project also included the delivery of high-resolution cartographic data covering the entire territory of Sweden, ensuring accurate propagation modelling and reliable coverage predictions. The maps were commissioned by the client and delivered as part of the task. They were created primarily from LiDAR and building data provided by the client. In addition, open OSM data and artificial intelligence algorithms were used in some areas to fill gaps where LiDAR data was not available.

Integration with Trafikverket’s existing passporting system enables efficient management of network assets and engineering data across the organisation’s workflows.

ATDI’s Polish engineering team led the project delivery. Their expertise in railway communications has been developed through collaboration with several major rail operators across Europe, and their experience played a key role in ensuring the successful implementation of the platform.

As part of ATDI’s Professional Services, the team also delivered a series of training sessions for Trafikverket engineers, ensuring they can fully utilise the platform’s capabilities. In addition, predictive propagation models were calibrated and fine-tuned using client-provided measurement data, thereby improving the accuracy of coverage and interference simulations.

With increasing demand for resilient, high-performance communications across railway networks, advanced radio planning tools are essential. Through the deployment of HTZ Communications and ATDI’s engineering expertise, Trafikverket now has a powerful platform to support the planning and evolution of its railway communications infrastructure, including the transition to FRMCS and other emerging rail technologies.
